Cycling Apps for Android and iPhone

A list of phone, computer, etc. apps related to cycling I’ve gathered together:
Training / Navigation
- Strava — pretty much every cyclist knows and uses this; not worth explaining anymore. Activity tracking, finding and creating routes.
- Strava Labs — Strava’s experimental projects. For example Heatmap lets you see a region’s cycling heatmap. Used in academic cycling research and in bike-lane planning to gauge ride density.
- Elevate — a Chrome extension that adds extra features to Strava.
- One Tap Strava — one of the most useful Strava add-ons for Android. You add its icon to your home screen; tapping it opens Strava and starts recording an activity in one step.
- Relive — turns your ride recordings into map-based visualised stories.
- Ride With GPS — a Strava alternative. Its free version offers roughly the same features as Strava.
- Garmin Connect — Garmin’s equivalent. Syncs especially well with Garmin devices.
- Komoot — another Strava alternative. Where you need to pay for Strava’s navigation/route-building, Komoot lets you build routes by bike type, view them in detail, and use turn-by-turn navigation on them. To use maps offline you have to pay a one-time purchase for the region. A monthly Premium tier also exists.
- MAPS.ME — primarily a Google Maps alternative, but its cycling navigation makes it usable on the bike. Auto-downloads the map of your region and works offline. Often includes hiking trails, water sources, etc. (uses OpenStreetMaps as data source). Completely free. Many bike tourists prefer it specifically for the offline mode.
- Kudo Coach — enter your race calendar and the app builds a training calendar around those races. Tell it how much time you have available and it picks a session. Considers weather etc. when suggesting. A paid tier exists but the free version is plenty.
- Maplocs — another navigation/route-building app; syncs with others.
- TrainingPeaks — build and track training. Custom plans require paid membership.
- tapiriik — syncs activities you upload to one popular tracker with the others. Upload to Strava, replicate to Garmin Connect etc.
- Zwift — turns trainer rides at home into a virtual game and lets you race other users. Monthly subscription, currently $15.
- Elevation Profile — simple app for generating elevation profile maps. Lets you pick car / walking / etc. Pick two points and it analyses the climb.
- Bisikletli Ulaşım Haritası — probably the most comprehensive cycling map made for Turkey. iPhone and Android apps exist. Bike repair shops, dangerous spots, bike lanes, cycling-friendly businesses, all overlaid on a map.
Maintenance
- Bike Repair — illustrated bike-repair app. Sold for 7.71 TL. Walks you through most maintenance jobs with photos.
- ProBikeGarage — enter your bike’s model, or just its components. Connects to Strava to pull total mileage and ride time. Reminds you when to service equipment. Tracks chain wear by km, monthly maintenance to-dos, etc.
- Bike Fast Fit — bike-fit measurement from your phone. iPhone only. Obviously not comparable to a physical bike fit but at 35 TL a cheaper alternative.
Bike Touring
- Warmshowers — the lodging app for bike tourists. Sign up, then choose either I’m a bike tourist looking for a place to stay or I can host bike tourists. Set your preferences, and either host cyclists who message you, or send requests to be hosted on your tour. Not pay-for-play — pure volunteer model.
- iOverlander — originally for the overland community (people who travel by vehicle and camp in unstructured areas). Lets people share both paid and free campsites they’ve discovered. You can see water, electricity, phone coverage status at each spot. Hugely useful for bike tourists.
- Windy — primarily a weather app, but its hourly wind direction and temperature forecasts make it very useful on a ride. Predict when and where the wind will hit on your touring region. iPhone and Android apps available.
